Cost: Varies according to zone
Tri-Rail
extends 72 miles from Miami (at a station near the
airport) to Magnolia
near West Palm Beach.
Advocating a "leave the driving to
us" philosophy,
the commuter rail line has weekday excursions to the
Antique District
in Lake Worth and Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Guides meet passengers
at stations throughout Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and
Palm Beach and escort them aboard two-level
air-conditioned trains. Guides answer questions aboard the train and
suggest activities to enjoy at different
destinations.
On
Saturdays and Wednesdays Tri-Rail sponsors tours to
the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop flea market and
circus. There
are also mystery excursions. Trains run
approximately once per hour on weekdays, every two
hours on Saturday, and once every three hours on
Sundays. During
the week, single-one-way fares range from $2 to
$5.50, depending on distance. On weekends,
an all-day unlimited use ticket costs $4.
Free
shuttle buses connect most Tri-Rail stations with
downtown Miami and other important locations.
Metrobus
Various locations in Greater Miami
(305) 770-3131
Cost: Varies
For
a self-guided tour, try Metrobus, which has 19
routes serving Greater Miami
and the beaches every day.
Stops are marked with green and blue signs
with a bus logo and route information.
Most of the lines start in downtown Miami and
run between 4:30 am and 2:30 am during the week. The
frequency of service varies from route to route,
especially on the weekend.
The
buses will take you to the Miami
Seaquarium, the
Orange Bowl Stadium, the
Cultural Center, the Metrozoo, and most other
popular attractions. The one-way fare is $1.25; students and
seniors over 65 pay 60 cents. When boarding, you pay the exact fare. The
fare box accepts tokens, dollar bills,
quarters, dimes, and nickels.
To
ride more than one bus or to take the rail to get to
your destination, you need to buy a transfer ticket
for 25 cents (10 cents for students and seniors)
when you first board. Deposit the fare and transfer fee and ask the
bus operator for a transfer.
When you get on the second bus, give the transfer
to the driver. If you purchase a bus-to-rail transfer,
insert the transfer into the slot at the front of
the rail fare gate.

Cost: 25 cents
Downtown
Miami's Metromover monorail is a fun, fast, and
cheap way to get a self-guided tour around town.
At a quarter a trip, this air-conditioned Disney-like
transport is a real bargain. Seniors, students, and people with
disabilities pay a dime with a rail permit.
The
individualized motor cars run on top of the 4.4-mile
elevated track that loops around downtown Miami and
to the city's two major business districts -
Brickell and Omni. Offering a bird's eye view of the
city below, Metromover makes stops at Bayside
Marketplace, Miami Arena, the Miami-Dade Cultural
Center, the Miami Convention
Center, and many hotels. From this perch you can see beautiful
Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
Service
runs daily 6 am to midnight, every 90 seconds during
peak hours and every 3 minutes off-peak. The fare to transfer to Metrorail is $1. Fares can be paid in tokens, coins, or dollar
bills, exact change only.
